Mirek Trnka focuses on a wide range of aspects related to ongoing climate change—from developing a functional, multi-level drought monitoring system through the creation of the www.intersucho.cz portal, to efforts to make future climate data accessible to the general public via www.klimatickazmena.cz, and initiating the www.climrisk platform. None of these activities would be possible without close collaboration with colleagues from the Global Change Research Institute, universities, institutions of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute. His main role is not only to initiate these platforms but also to implement them, evaluate their usability, and work on their continuous improvement.
As a researcher, he leads or participates in studies analyzing the causes and impacts of drought episodes, heatwaves, and vegetation fires, including efforts to predict their spatial extent and intensity, as well as to understand how these phenomena varied in the past. All of this is carried out with the vision of preventing impacts that society can avoid—among other things, by taking into account the future climatic conditions in which today’s designed structures will exist.
